Before I took the transmisson out I would remove the shift lever by unscewing it and pull it up and out. There is a cross pin that goes into a slot in the cover. Some times these slot/pins wear so that things don't line up. No loss of time because this has to come off before the trans comes out.Plus you will
have a small peek into shift rails and so forth.
