towing a trailer 1800 1972

Ron:

My '72 ES has a rear bumper of rather hefty chrome-plated steel bolted onto four rather thick strap iron brackets. Those brackets slide through rubber seals and are bolted directly into boxed in metal sections that are similar in construction to the jack points. No shock absorbers involved!

I have a Volvo manual for the '73 ES. That manual describes the bumper as aluminum alloy and states that it is bolted to the body with telescopic shock-absorbers.

I agree that a bumper hitch would never work with a shock-absorber connection, and had never before realized that the attachment method changed between the two years!
