I agree that a bumper hitch would never work with a shock-absorber connection, and had never before realized that the attachment method changed between the two years!

Not Volvo's idea. The US government mandated energy-absorbing bumpers for the '73 model year. In all other markets, the '73 ES had the same bumpers as the '72.

Some will tell you it was that federal mandate that killed off the 1800. The US was responsible for a large portion of 1800 sales, and those honkin' bumpers looked horrid on the svelte sportwagon.
