Rough Idle, Engine Runs too Rich, Check Engine Light Malfunction 1986

Hi,

Thanks for all the input.

I don't have a Chilton Manual so I don't know how to check the ECU connectors.
I have checked the timing with a timing gun and everything seemed to be fine. I still haven't had the chance to check the Fuel Pressure Regulator; it and the Air Mass Meter (AMM) are the 2 culprits that are still at question. The O2 sensor gave a correct reading when I checked it out, so I think it is still okay.

A new thing I found was that the Check Engine Light is not ON at all. It should lit up when the key is at the "ON" position. That led me to think that maybe, just maybe the whole ECU is gone. If the Engine Light had come on, I'd have gotten some type of code already ... so, I think my problem just worsened. Aside from the (rough idle, running too rich), now the Check Engine Light is dead.

Again, this is what I've alreasdy done and checked:
1. New Spark plugs, wires, cap, rotors, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, timing=okay
2. Checked the engine temp sensor, found no fault
3. Checked the O2 sensor, found no fault
4. Did the whole timing job. Timing belt, cam+crank seal, coolant flush, MotorVac cleaning, Power steering flush
5. Checked all 4 fuel injectors, found no fault
6. Sprayed Disc break cleaner all around the head and throttle, no apparent leak can be heard.

Gosh ... what more can I do to this damn '86 740 GLE!!

Please help!!
Daniel (San Jose, CA)
