Yep, timing would be the first thing I'd check... I recently reset the timing on a friend's 1800E and it made a world of difference in acceleration. although I set it per specs at 10* BTDC.

additionally:
throttle position sensor
fuel pressure
injector functioning
vacuum leaks
distribitor vacuum advance
distributor mechanical advance
