Yes the OBD has 3 test modes .
Diagnostic test mode 1: fault code Retrival

Diagnostic test mode 2:System sensor signal Test as to whether signal are reeived from certain sensors and switches .(you can hear or fell them work )

Diagnostic test mode 3: injection system Component Test
(You can also check the EGR if equipped)

Look it this site for all the codes and how to use the OBD .

They are a must have .
Print them out and put them in your car .Great on the side of the road .

Ps You and I would never work on a PC w/o unpluging the cord and touching the case first, before the board . Remember it is a computer. Think of it like that.
