By oil trap do you mean the roughly 4x4x4 inch plastic box on the side of the block, below the manifold?

I don't have the answer to your situation, but I was only able to change one of those boxes once, and nearly twisted my wrist to breaking in doing so. How do you get at it??

We currently have 2 '89 245s.

Which car are you working on now?
