I had the same problem on my '92 240 700 1991

and it was due to a cracked solder joint in the warning light relay. It was too expensive to replace, so I decided to open it up. It was easy to see the faild solder, and a quick touch with the soldering iron fixed it. It's been working for almost two years since then.

I agree that it's more likely to be a connection problem, but if you're going to remove the warning bulb anyway, it might be worth a look inside the relay.
