I believe it is prefered to be low as apposed to high if you can't hit the marks.
The reason being that a too high level has the gears stiring the oil excessivly and causing foaming. With air trapped in the oil, it is compressible and the actuators for the clutches won't work properly.
On the other hand when I flushed mine I pumped out about 3 quarts before it started sucking air and pushing it out. Therefore I suspect you can be quite low and have no ill effects.
