help identifying a front end problem.. 700

..My 89 700 turbo sedan has a soon to be serious problem. The drivers side front wheel can be moved side to side (not top to bottom) easily about 3/4 of an inch on it's own. The pass. side wheel is tight, with no movement. When the front wheels are off the ground, I can see the strut and spring assembly moving with the wheel, the drivers inner tie rod has slop/movement in it, in fact the looseness carries on all the way to the steering coloumn u-joints that lead to the firewall, when the driv. tire is forcibely wiggled.

Grab the pass. side front wheel and give it a firm thrashing, and there's no movement at all, on any parts in the steering system.

The steering rod boots that were put on the car previous to my purchase were too short or something, they've split open completely, exposing the inner tie-rods, that's how I can see the drivers side one moving.

Is the steering rack shot? or am I lucky in that it could be an inner tie rod?

If the rack was worn, wouldn't both front wheels have side-to-side play, not just the one?

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!!!! Josh
