Problem solved, or so it seems 200 1990

Definitely clean up - or replace, they're cheap - your flame trap, but even a clean flame trap causes crankcase gases (at times containing oil mist) to enter the intake ducting upstream of the throttle body. That's the designed function of the PCV system. Eventually the TB gets pretty grunged up and needs a cleaning. It really should be removed for thorough cleaning or you stand a chance of flushing some of the crud into the intake manifold. And there's more grunge behind the throttle plate - tough to get to with the TB in-situ.
