Timing Belt Replacement - Necessary Components

The damper is also known as the crank pulley or harmonic balancer.

With the 87 you will need the special tool to remove or use the "rope trick"
to hold the engine pistons from moving as you loosen the big bolt in the center of the balancer.

Since your next question will be what is the rope trick, it follows. Rope trick is used only if you do not have the crank holding tool.

If the car is now drivable, it can be guessed that the present timing belt is on the money or close. That is a help.

Remove the top belt cover to expose the cam pulley. On it will be a dot stamped into the face of the pulley. This dot when straight up and in line with the notch on the back cover will have the engine at Top Dead Center. Turn the engine with the crank pulley bolt until this notch is straight up.

Now that the engine is at TDC, remove the number one spark plug and turn the engine AFTER TDC (clockwise as you are standing in front of the engine) about 1/4 turn. Through the spark plug hole push a lot of rope into the cylinder. What you are doing is filling the space between the piston and head. Do not worry, the valves are closed since the engine is on its power stroke so you will not damage the valves.

I used a cotton sash cord type rope about 1/4 inch in diameter. Some ropes come with plastic or tape on the ends which you need to cut off so it will not come off inside your engine.

With as much rope as you can fit into the cylinder, turn the crank pulley backwards to compress the rope. It should stop at least 1/8 rotation after TDC as seen on the cam pulley. You can then apply lots of pressure to release the crank pulley. Once the bolt is loose you can use the cam pulley bolt to bring the piston down a bit to remove the rope then reset the engine to TDC. With the spark plug out there is no compression resistance so it should be easy.

Take a good look at the crank drive belt gear before you remove it to do the seal. It can be put on backwards and be damaged if the bolt is tightened if the gear is on backwards.

Take care when installing the belt. TDC on the crankshaft drive gear is not marked well or at all. It is referenced on one of the "belt guards" and is in a relationship to the keyway.

A trick I do is to put the double mark on the belt over TDC on the crank gear, and then get the belt under the gear and in the teeth. I then without releasing the hold at TDC push rope between the bottom of the gear and the flange below the gear to hold the belt against the gear so it does not slip out of position. This allows me to then verify that the other marks on the belt and the cam and distributer pulleys are aligned and over the tensioner properly with both hands.

Once the belt is on and the tensioner released, put everything back together using the new balancer. To tighten the bolt, turn the engine BEFORE TDC (counterclock wise) about 1/4 turn and rope trick it as before to tighen and torque the bolt.
