740 starting problem 700 1991

Hello...I had a 1985 745 wagon which had aprox 120k on the odo. The wagon ran fine for a while but then I began to have starting problems. One day it would start and later that day it would not. It was a very frustrating experience, but I was determined to locate the cause. One morning, on the way to work, I went over a set of railroad tracks. The engine sputtered and died out. I pushed it into a parking lot and then called a co-worker to have me picked up. At lunch time I had a friend drive me over to where the wagon was and tried to start it but it would not. Not having a spark checker on hand, I began the task of visually checking all the wiring on the engine, looking for a loose connectors and or frayed wiring. As I was checking the distributer connections, (spark plug) & (Hall Sensor), the engine started! ( My Friend was at the wheel cranking the engine per my call) I then drove the wagon to work. When I arrived, I popped the hood open and crawled on top of the engine to get a view of the Hall Sensor connector(located lower right on distributor by firewall) and found out that all three wires had the insulation cracked and had fallen off to the point that when the car was being driven and the wires moved....they shorted out and the engine died. Or if the car was parked, and when I got in, the slight movement of the body would cause the wires to short out!. I cut off all the bad wires(battery cables disconnected) and soldered new wires of the same gauge and color back in place. I never had another starting problem with the wagon again.I hope that this info will help you.
