I may have jumped too quickly to a conclusion. In fact I ASSUMED that soldering the ground wire was the issue. In fact I have not reinstalled the distributor with the Crane unit in it. Rather I installed a spare distributor with traditional points and condensor. So, I may have created some confusion here. Thank you John for your message.
