Help Me Pick the Brick: 265 or 240?

As tough as the M46 manual transmissions are, the AW70 auto in the '93 is a tremendously durable piece of machinery as well. Keep the fluid free of coolant (from failed radiators) and change it once in a while, and it'll see you well past 300k. And if it breaks used ones are plentiful and cheap. I'm with you on those cars being way overpriced - I got my rust-free 740 for $2500,$CDN, with under 150k miles. And my 780, with 160k, was even cheaper, though missing some interior bits. When I said I'd buy the 265 cheap, I was thinking ~$500 cheap. Now at the other end of the spectrum I did see a guy pay $10k CDN for a mint 240 Classic (only 20k miles!) recently, but I think you should definitely be able to get what you want for well under $3000. The key is find someone who doesn't know or care about Volvos and wants to get rid of one, or someone selling their pride & joy who is more concerned with sending it to a good home than getting top dollar.
By the way, any chance your Saab/Volvo guy happens to have a Saab APC boost control system laying around?...
