fuel guage problem 120-130

I have just replaced the seal around the fuel tank sender unit because it had perished and was leaking fuel. Also in the last few days tidied up the wires under the dash after repacing the firewall carpet. When I started the beast the fuel guage goes all the way over to full when I know there is only half a tank. Anyone got any ideas whether I have messed up something on the sender unit or maybe the wiring on the instument panel.
