A/C Electrical question.

I have an 88 740 GLE with the 93 T-bird HO 5.0 and running an 89 5.0 harness and 91 ECU. T-bird engine is basically the 94-95 mustang engine and accessories. I have just begun the electrical connection of the A/C. When I put 12V to the grey blade -connector on the end of the driver side harness both sides of the A/C connector r ead 12V is this correct for the 87-93 harness? The compressor for my engine requires the connector to have on side of the connector to be 12V and one to be grounded. Is this just a difference in requirements of the compressors? Do the old compressors use the compressor ground with only 12v to the connector?
Thanks,
Bob
