This sounds more like an electrical problem. Code 87 means that there is no feedback to the ECU indicating that the fuel pump is running. Very likely the fuel pump relay or just loose wiring/connections/ground.
The last two times I thought my engine was going south (uneven running, terrible gas mileage, constant open loop) I cleaned the 10 pin connectors and cured the problem - 5.0Ls are famous for this!
Hope you can cure it cheaply
