Would this tire combo work well?

A 225/50R16 tire is the same height as a 205/55R16. You know the 55 is not describing the height directly, right? The 55 means that the sidewall height is 55% of the tread width.

So a 225/55 has more height than a 205/55.

Why don't you want 225/50R16 front and rear? Staggered setups might work on BMW's, but it seems that everyone who has tried staggered setups on RWD Volvos have a lot of understeer.
