I have a 90 740 with an SBF mated to a T5. Yes, the tail shaft is a bit short, but it's a simple matter of opening the front of the drive tunnel shifter hole a few inches, filling the back side and a. use a short throw shifter and b. put a good bend to the rear on the shifter. There's at least a couple of youngsters on turbobricks.com that have mounted T56's. I considered it until I checked the weight of a T56 versus a T5. Additionally, a T56 is typically set up as a dual overdrive transmission. Fantastic on an oval track...less so on the street. Add to that the rather tall gearing of the stock T56 made me change my mind. I know some folks want the cool factor of a 6 speed but it just didn't add up for me. Additional weight, fatter dimensionally and gear ratios that were less than what I was looking for. I realize if you buy one from FRP they will gear it any way you want it...but, here's the stock gearing for a T56
1st - 2.97
2nd - 2.07
3rd - 1.43
4th - 1.00
5th - .80
6th - .62
It takes a heck of an engine to walk the dog with gearing like this.
