Starting Problems already 850

Just got my new 850, 1995 GLT non-turbo, this is now my third of this model. Go to pick up GF at work, but I experience huge traffic conjestion on the way (3hrs worth). Switch off and park, car won't start again. Had the mechanic out to the car and he eventually started it by fiddling with the starter motor, said the contacts were dirty or something, clean them. I wonder if anyone has had the same problem when the car is hot? Battery is fine for sure, should there be other things I should have a look at while I'm in there? After he started it I drove directly home, but also the AC didn't work, I hope its related and he didn't break anything... Can anyone offer advise?? Stories?

Cheers

Fortunately for you, your '95 has under-the-hood OBD DLCs. You can read your own fault codes. If you don't know how, learn how to read fault codes, purchase the diagnostic handbook that lists all the codes and what they mean, and your well on your way to doing your own troubleshooting.

I have a 95 850 glt, the check engine light was on before, and it was a piston misfiring, tune up done, worked great, now 2000 miles later it is on again... think it is a malfunction. How do I check them on my own? How do I chech the fault code, where are they? Where do I get the book to check? thanks.

I ran a diagnostic check on and came up with a string of codes

A3
444
311
313
314
321
424
142
121
311

Now where do I go from here, still no start this morning, so obvioulsy it was nothing to do with being hot.

Sorry - this darn thing will no longer let me edit my own posts (anyone else having this problem?)

I meant to say "A3", not "A#".

A# is the ABS. Did you check the engine codes (A2)? Your wheel speed sensors can be cleaned I think - Klaus can tell you how or Google it or search this site. He posted something in the past few weeks about it.

Here is the table for A3. The table for A2 is at the same site.

Thanks for those links, I think used the wrong DTC.. I checked A6 Ignition system and came up with 411 TPS fault. If I could get the car to start then I would clear the codes and try again, but for the moment it really is a brick... Any idea where the A6 codes are??

Good morning. You don't need to start the car to clear the codes. Just the key in pos II.
Go through all of the "A" slots and clear all of the codes you can. Those that remain are "real" and will point you to the problem.
Follow the same procedure for the "B" box.

Volvo used to publish a Pocket Data Booklet, which I have ($20) and lists all possible codes from all slots. It does not show how to fix the problem...

As for your car not starting, is it not turning over or not firing? If it is not turning over, take off the red wire to the battery and clean the ends with a wire brush. Remove all of the white residue and clean the post before reassembling.

Thanks KlausC

The update is: The starter motor has at some stage been replaced with a non-genuine part, which if it worked would be fine, but it seems its an intermittent problem with it (brushes, contacts??). I can always start the car by jumping the starter motor directly to the + on the battery. So the problem is somewhere in the signal to the starter, probably a short? as it is also running the battery down almost everytime. Today the starter will come out and replaced with a reconditioned unit I hope, and check the line. If there is anything you could add for a check them it would be appreciated. Will clear the codes, and see what lingers after that. Clear is 4sec ON 3sec ON right? I'll check on the board again, been a few years since my last 850....and the memory isn't as good as it was.....lol

For a refresher, read this:

http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm

About 1/3 page down is how to do codes and erasers.

As to the starter, probably the solenoid is kaput. I would have just gone to a junk yard for a "new" starter. Most will still be good.
