Nothing 'special' about 1997, or 1996 for that matter. Your car is OBDII and cheap scanners will work. But you do not want a scanner that is CAN enabled. Go to your local autoparts store for a test. And then ask Santa for one that reads the OBDII goodies, including O2 sensors.
