For a lot less money and aggravation than the installation of the trip computer add-on, you can buy a ScanGauge II: http://www.scangauge.com/

Simply plug it into your OBD-II port, set a few paramaters, and you can access all the data which would appear on the dash display, and much more.

Also, you can read and reset any codes which your ECU might throw.
