Performed 2nd Compression test need clarification on PCV system S70 1998

New compression test on cylinders
1= 160 dry
2= 154 dry
3= 138 dry 150 wet
4= 130 dry 170 wet
5= 120 dry 165 wet
Added 2 tablespoons of Marvel Mystery Oil to each cylinder. Let sit overnight and burnt off the Mystery oil the scene was reminiscent of all of us running behind the mosquito truck fogger in those precious days of youth! So are these readings dismal? Should I forget working on the clogged PCV since Klaus has indicated it will have no bearing on oil consumption? Thanks You all

Compression and PCV are not related. If the PCV is clogged, it can cause increased oil consumption as part of the system is designed to reclaim oil vapors and return them to the sump when they are condensed back into liquid.

Your NA engine should have a screen in the flame trap, toss it. Then clean the parts and put it back together. Cleaning the small diameter vacuum line that goes to cyl #1 is tough, the condensed oil tends to turn into very hard crystals and is almost impossible to remove. It is easier to buy a 3 ft section and replace it.

If you remove the intake manifold, replacing the gasket is suggested. Any leaks will cause the engine to run rich. If the gasket comes off clean and you think you can reuse it, give it a try. Remember the torque is about 14 pounds on the 10mm nuts.

So long as you are not getting any misfire codes, your compression is OK. Not great, just OK. If you start to see oil smoke coming out of the rear of the car at traffic lights and long down hills, it just might be the valve stem seals that allow oil to be pushed pass them and cause the smoke during high vacuum conditions. Replacing the seals is a LOT of work.

I cleaned the flame trap. The small screen was not there. Indie mechanic must of removed it when I had him change the PCV out 23K ago. The car has started to smoke since I put the MMO in the cylinders or was already smoking upon take off from stop. I had a friend drive behind me recently. He noted a puff of smoke upon take off from stop signs. I understand this is an indication of worn rings and the cost of repair is three times the value of the car. Gang I thank you all for your help in servicing the car over the last eight years. Your responses have saved me much $'s. I am most appreciative! Thank you too Klaus... Best Regards, Blake

I suggest rereading Klaus's comment about worn valve seats. I think the smoke you see is from worn valve seats not rings. My 95 850 with about the same mileage as your S70 does the same thing. It is my understanding that the rings rarely go bad on these engines. A better way to test the rings is to go down a hill with the engine revved to 4000 or more rpm's, hold it there for a minute then let your foot off the gas. If the rings are bad you will see a cloud of smoke. My 850 passed that test...:)
