What websites should I use to purchase a used car from a private owner? 850 1996

Hello All,

I have been tasked with the job of finding two used cars: One a Volvo - any model, but preferably one with a known history of carefree operation. The other, an Asian brand. I can think of:

Craig’s List

Bargain News

Auto Trader

Can anyone recommend any other websites to peruse?

Also, from what I’ve read over the years, the most “bullet proof” Volvo models seem to be the 240 and 940. Unfortunately, I have never had the pleasure of owning either model. Besides our beloved 850s are there any FWD Volvo models that are particularly trouble free? For example, I recall reading the automatic transmissions on the early S60s were prone to failure. Things like that. I know as soon as you say “used” all bets are off, but I am just trying to avoid a “headache” if I can.

Thanks to all who reply.

Hugh

All the web sites in the world can find you a good deal on a volvo.

Verifiable maintenance records (dealers keep records) and a proper examination by a good Volvo tech is the route to a decent Volvo.

Interestingly, the best used car that I have purchased was an '08 XC70 purchased from a Lincoln dealer, The car had new tires and brakes, 78k miles and light scratches on EVERY panel including the gas door! It was $6000 less than the average for dealer cars at Volvo shops.

I had it checked by my dealer, it needed a vacuum pump, all else looked good. I was able to check the maintenance records at the dealer that cared for the car.,

In a bit over two years and 15K I have done nothing but oil changes, although the sunroof developed a problem that I did not repair yet (I might not bother to repair it).

The next best was a Chevy that I bought from a Cadillac dealer.

You may not be able to find an older Volvo at a dealer, but good dealers sell good cars.

      James,

Thank you. Your are right, you can sometimes find a good car from an unlikely source. Maintenance records are key, and are evidence that the car has been maintained. I personally have saved every services invoice on my two ’96 850s and ’99 XC since I acquired them, and each file now rivals a small manuscript.

My hope is the old adage: What you want, wants you. That is, a good Volvo model will be attracted into my life. However, I just can sit back, I have to look.

You know the drill: No automatic Volvos from 2001-2003.

The 240 and 940 are RWD.

You didn't mention the price range. I am assuming less than $5K. The 240 cars are going back up in price, but no ABS until 1998(?) and only a driver airbag. Same with the 940, but they are still cheap.

Maintenance history!! Every seller claims they change the oil every 3K miles - that is pure BS. Look for some one who uses synthetic.

As for Asian, Honda, Toyota, and Mazda are all good. They tend to rust rear fenders, just in front of the wheels.

Craigslist is OK for really local cars. Autotrader requires ad money, so those cars are usually in better condition (garages).

Have fun! Looking is better than buying.

      Klaus,

You hit right on the head with regard to the budget: tops $5,000. Also, any thought/opinion with regard to which model 240 vs. 940 is more “bullet proof”, i.e. more durable and less expensive to maintain. I know the 940 came out after the 240, but are similar in terms of engine.

Should you venture into mid-80s 240s and 740s, be aware of the biodegradable wiring harnesses in the engine compartment.

              Al,

Thank you. My hope is to come across a nice 1994-95 940 sedan with a moon roof. From my lips to God’s ears!

              Alschnerz,

Thanks! I recall hearing about that problem, in particular with the 700 series cars. I am going to try to remain in the 240 or 940 categories. Still, thank you for reminding me.

As far as 940 vs 240 maintenance and reliability it's pretty much a case of six of one-half dozen of the other. Many parts are the same--engine/transmission wise and the ancillary units (P/S pump- AC compressor - alternator) and the same for many chassis parts (steering racks - differentials). Differences? - front brake calipers - suspension hardware etc. but each have their own issues (240 front calipers have four pistons to seize up - 940 calipers have one-but sliders can seize from lack of lube----240 large front suspension bushings fail -- 940/740 front trailing arm "cones" fail, etc).
It really comes down to what you prefer to drive - the 940 is larger and drives that way - the 940 has more interior room.
I think given today's market your money can buy more "car" with the not as popular 740/940 models.
One caveat I always advise---don't spend all your budget for the car--keep 20 percent in reserve for the inevitible repairs needed down the road. Spend the money for an hour's worth of labor to have a qualified shop check out the car pre-purchase. -- Dave

          Dave,

Very good advice. To its credit, the 240 has become sort of a “cult car” or “iconic Volvo”. It just screams Volvo with its boxy design. A lot of people, who are not passionate about the brand, still know that a 240 is a Volvo. That “cult status” in my opinion seems to be reflected in the prices used 240s command.

          Hugh
