Well, did my first 850 starter replacement, and thanks to a couple of tips from brickboard response, got past a couple snags. I've been working for years on the 240's, 740's and 940's, and my son's 850 gave me the first experience of working on an 850. I offer this as reference to anyone else who has not tackled this job yet. If anyone else has futher suggestions, I would be interested.
Removing components will save you a lot of time, and give you more working room since things get tight.
1. Disconnect battery cables.
2. Remove the plastic throttle body cover (single torque screw on top).
3. Remove three 10mm screws from top throttle body assembly bracket (bracket that holds the idle control valve. This will give you more clearance to lift out the radiator fan.
4. Pull large hoses from idle control valve, pull small hose off vacuum manifold at bracket (obvious to get bracket out of the way), disconnect throttle linkage (just snaps off and on) and flip this assembly up and out of the way. This will also give you more clearance to lift our radiator fan, since the front of the bracket will be in the way.
5. Remove the large air intake hose between the throttle body and filter box (two claps and twist off flame trap at back). This will give you better access to starter bolts.
6. Unplug radiator fan connectors, unclip hoses fastened to fan housing, remove top two houseing screws (torque) and lift out radiator fan. It is held by four torque screws, BUT YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE TWO BOTTOM SCREWS since the fan housing is slotted at there (its about impossible to get to them for removal anyway).
7. Remove starter wiring (one single wire (green)push-on connection and two large red and one smaller white on large screw post).
7. Remove two starter bolts, at about 180 degrees from one another at right of starter near throttle body (a third hole at upper front of starter is a locating pin only)
8. You cannot see it, but there is a bracket on the back of the starter with a single bolt holding it to the engine block. Remove this single bolt and lift out starter.
9. While your at it check your flame trap and throttle body for dirt. You may want to clean the throttle body while your there.
10. Assemble in reverse order.
