Why avoid the AWD?

My wife is planning to get rid of her ford explorer, and get a volvo v50 on lease. I've never driven a volvo AWD - my car is an 88 240.

I was pleased that she is leasing a car on a volvo platform, and suggested the AWD since it will be closer to what she is driving now in terms of winter handling.

Although I do have a soft spot for the way my 240 with studded tires and sandbags really sticks to the ground...
