Engine detailing & cleaning 850 1995

Can anyone offer any advice on how I should go about cleaning and detailing the engine compartment of my 850? Is it ok to just blast away with water and a hose or are their certain components in there that I should not get wet under all circumstances? Can I get away with just using the same Mother's car-wash liquid to wash the engine bay? Finally, anyone know how I can get this stubborn oil stain that has glued itself to the block and certain plastic parts of the engine?
