nox sensor 850 1995

The check engine light came on but the car seems to run just fine. I took it to my local independent shop and they read a 143 code?I My have the # wrong but they said it was the nox (nocks) sensor. They said there are two and I must be running on one good one. The price is $325 parts and labor, are they blowing smoke? Does it have to be replaced? Why is the car running just fine? Larry
