Thinking of buying an S80 S80

My wife and I own a 1999 V70 XC and a 1990 740 16 valve (253,000). It's time to replace the 740 and we are looking at a 2000/2001 S80. I was told to stay away from the 1999 S80 and all none turbo models as the engines are made by GM and very poor. Any comments/advice?
