850 will not start 850

1996 850 non-turbo 157k
Drove to the supermarket last night on my way to a superbowl party, absolutely nothing remarkable about the trip. Car started/ran/drive as it always does.

Came out of the store, started the car, it ran normally for a second and then sputtered and eventually died. Subsequent attempts to start it: it turns over, catches, sometimes will run a LITTLE, very rough, for a second, but will not remain running. Let it sit for a few hours and tried it again; turns over strongly but does not catch. Check Engine light is NOT on. What a refreshing change. :)

I'm thinking fuel delivery. But I'm also wondering if it could be vacuum related...? Since getting it back from the shop a couple of months ago, when it's been super cold [and it has, I am in Boston] it runs a little rough until its fully warmed up. I've been suspicious that there's a small vacuum leak and figured I'd take care of it the next time it was in for service.

I read through old posts here late last night but could not find any situations like mine. The other problems seemed more focused on electrical stuff, and that does not appear to be the problem with my 850.

I'm going back there today to check things out in the daylight; before I pay to have it towed, I'd like to check some of the obvious possible culprits, like the vacuum lines [to the fuel pressure regulator especially].

Anyone up early and have some words of advice to avert the tow truck man?

Thanks in advance,
-Jimmy
