Snow chains

Chains on the front only! And you will only need them in Wyoming and Reno, if you go the I80 route.
Good quality all season tires on all four corners will get you through the rest of the country. If you encounter a blizzard, slow down and look for a motel. Remember, it is all interstate highways, and they keep them clear of snow in this country. Besides, CA requires chains in the passes regardless of the snow tire.
If you want to avoid mountain passes in the winter, go south to I40 and then take I5 back to the bay area.
Bon Voyage,

Klaus
