The 850 wiper arms develop a bend in themselves in normal use. A design defect IMO. You can carefully rebend them or replace the suckers.

I ended up replacing the driver's side wiper arm on our '96 850 for just this problem.

Volvo seems to have a history of aluminum parts which deform in normal use. The aluminum outside door handle surrounds on our '93 240 have somehow deformed such that what should be straight lines are semi-circular sections. Weird.
