I replaced the air pump in my 97 854R last year after reading about it here. I drilled two holes in the bottom of the pump casing before putting it in. The check valve bolts,(2), were pretty hard to access, one of them is just in close proximity to something I can't picture right now. I had to cut a 10mm box wrench in two to get it and my hand in there. It wasn't bad though and allowed me the chance to check out the cruise control pump as well as some additional vacumn lines etc. I got the parts from FCP.
