Also have your daughter jiggle the ignition key, just to verify that the electrical portion of the ignition is making proper contact. After the engine is running, of course.

If it is the alternator, and the alternator is turning nicely, it probably needs new brushes. The brushes are part of a housing attached to the alternator and can be replaced.
