On a '96 you have four options to deal with the service light:
1) Remove the lamp. That means yanking the dash cap off and removing the instrument cluster. If your odometer has failed now is a good time to do that while you repair the gears.
2) Have the dealer reset the lamp for you. Some will do it for free and others will charge you a "diagnostic" fee. My stealership charges the fee.
3) Buy a Draper reset tool. I see them on eBay from the UK and I think they are around US $100 to $120.
4) Buy the VAG-COM adapter cable and the VOL-FCR software. That is also available on eBay. It is about as close as you can get to a Volvo Scan Tool and I think it runs around US $80.00 for the package. Note on the VOL-FCR tool, it does not do well with engine codes but an el-cheapo OBD-II scanner will take care of that.
On '95 and below models you can turn it off with the A-7 OBD-I port.
