Catalytic converter S70 1998

Hi Klaus,
My friend says he has seen cats getting plugged and allowing some soot through unburned, although eventually the cat can get so plugged that issues appear upstream too. Is there another way to rule out the cat?
If it was simply oil getting by the exhaust valve guides/seals should it be coming out as dry carbon, rather than still in a liquid state?
Thanks
John
