Re: DIY boost controller for 850? 850 94

Joe,

I recently installed an HKS manual bost controllers in my 850 Turbo T5r. It works okay. What you really need to do is to increase your octane rating with octane booster added to your fuel. Be careful, too much will ruin your O2 sensors I have done in the past. I made my own boost controller long ago but since have replaced it with the HKS unit. As far as performance is concerned, let's just say that I ran a 14.1 ETA in the quarter mile on street tires. If you don't know what that number means, a few Mustang 5.0's were running 14.105 ETA's. It was hilarious. I was grinning the entire length of the run.

When you overboost which I have done many times the engine shuts down by means of cutting off the ignition. I don't know if any engine damage occurred but my car still runs fine to this day. Believe me, my heart stopped for a split second. As far as maintenance goes, I had to replace the ATF almost immediately after the Banzai runs. Now I replace it every 30.000 miles. I change oil every 3.000 miles. Oh yeah, rotors had to be replaced too since I had them glowing bright orange at one point.

Let's just say that I abused my car for a while and it still runs fine. Good luck and be careful. By the way, this is by no means a recommendeation for doing what I did.

Jay
