Even on my 2008, the rear seat light stays on when the key is off. I agree, it is a design flaw.

Carrying a spare "jumper" battery is a good idea, so long as it is always charged.

If I lived in NYC, or any other large city, I wouldn't own a car. Public trans and rental cars for trips.
