There is no overflow valve. If the leak is on the passengerside, it could be the air hose connection that goes from the tank to the top of the filler neck. If the fuel sender or pump seal is poor, you will smell a lot of gas in the car. Easy to check, pull out the carpet and take off the 2 inspection plates by the rear seat.
It is not wise to overfill the tank. Liquid gasoline will drain into the charcoal cannister and cause a lot of problems. When the pump reaches the automatic shutoff at the handle, it is best practice to NOT add any additional fuel.
