Your point is................?? 850 1997

Your point is..........????????????????????? Your proposed idea is contrary to the laws of physics. A filter is basically a fine network of small obstructions to airflow that trap particulate matter. Therefore it will decrease the volume and/or pressure of air from one side to the other. The only way to beat this is to remove some of the "mass" of obstruction (ie filter), increase the volume of air being filtered at any one given moment, or force the air through the filter under pressure.

Now then, the size of the airbox is fixed unless one devises a custom enlarged air box. There is the concept of the poor man's Ram Air System (another intensive custom modification). So we are left to the final option that K&N has used - don't filter as effeciently. Again, I suggest one carefully inspects a K&N filter and one can see the "holes" in the material.

I guess the bottom line is this - if you want great flow dynamics - choose K&N or Amsoil Filters. If you want to protect the engine from particulate matter, choose an OEM Volvo (paper) Filter or an Amsoil Filter.
