Added R134 and now the compressor doesn't engage.

You can bypass the switch per Klaus's instructions, but you will lose the low pressure cutout protection. I found that I could not get the pressure high enough with a can of 134a until I used a heat gun on the can to raise its pressure. A hair dryer would work fine, too.
