XC90 Overheating? XC90

A friend of mine has a circa 2005 XC90. One day last week, she came home and parked the car in the garage. She saw smoke coming from the engine area and through the front grill she could see a glowing red. The front part of the hood was very hot. After a while she opened the hood and could see no visible damage. Later that day, she drove the car and noticed no problems. She continues to drive the car with no apparent problems. I looked at the engine compartment and could see no damage at all. Any ideas what the problem was( or is)?
