Hello All,
I want to share some good news that I hope others can use. Based upon the problem I described above, I thought I would be required to replace the ignition switch which is a part that list for $296. Instead, my independent mechanic took the center console apart and found that some how a control cable that goes from the gear shift to the ignition had come loose. This cable is held in place by a bracket. The cable had "popped off" this bracket and had become loose and by doing so allowed me to pull the key out of "R", "N", "D", "2" or "1" instead of being limited to only "P". He cleaned the cable and resecured with the braket.
He cannot explain how the cable became loose. However, now, as it should be, the key can only be removed from the ignition when the gear selector is in "P".
I share this information with others, so you too can hopefully avoid the cost of a new ignition switch.
