You can jump the relay (connect 15 and 87 (IIRC) which is top middle and bottom middle) when its acting up. That should let the pump start, however if you can hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the key (a little hum from the trunk for a second or two) its probably not that.
How is it acting during starting, just cranking and not seeming to catch?
I'd try checking the color of the plugs when you are experiencing this (assuming you have 10-20 minutes to spare to do some diagnosis), see if there are any telling signs.
When's the last time you replaced the distributor Cap/rotor/coil?
Any chance you've got a leaky injector causing you to lose compression? You might try this fix and see if it goes away . That would point to a leaky injector (or several).
