>If I was having a fuel injector problem, wouldn't I have a rough idle from low compression? The car runs like a champ once it starts.
I assume you would have a rough idle as it starts, but I honestly don't know how long the oil to re-seal the entire ring vs sealing enough to start the engine.
>I can hear the fuel pump hum. If memory serves, when the original pump was dying, I could REALLY hear the hum.
I think the fuel pump relay is not your problem, when mine have gone, its intermittent stalling (usually when hot, and driving) and it starts fine.
>I did a major tune-up about 1 1/2 years ago. Yes, I did replace the dist. cap and rotor. Coil is original.
Good, good. Cap/Rotor should be fine with only a year and a half on them.
At this stage, I'd pull the plugs when its not starting (after 30 seconds of cranking with no start).

If you're not driving it "like its stolen," are you really driving?
