Curious you mentioned the ride. I drove a 2001 many times and thought it was the best riding Volvo I've ever been in. Meaning in terms of road isolation and softness. My 850 is sportier and firmer but you definitely feel more of the road.
The 2001 was my parents car and it had only 85-90k miles. It was also well maintained by the previous owner. It was pretty reliable, although I always felt it needed a ETM even though it had been replaced once. To sum it up, make sure the tranny software is up to date and the ETM is good if you decide to buy the 2001.
BTW - The car did a great job of protecting my Dad when he was rear-ended at @ 65mph...:)
