Check the top of the bevel gear case first, if you can. Usually, when the gears go wrong, they cook the oil and the increase of pressure results in overflow and leakage (by then the gears are in need of replacement).
The other item to check is the center carrier bearing. I am assuming that a shift into neutral does not change the noise.
Bearing noise can fluctuate during turns. Find a nice stretch of road and gently rock the car with the steering wheel and see if the noise changes. Having the cruise control set will help.
