Replacing spring seat is no fun 850

It normally take me 2 hours/side. I grab an adjustable wrench to hold the top of the shock piston and then loosen the large nut 1 turn before I even jack up the car.

After the car is jacked and the strut is out, I compress the spring about 10 inches - a very loose spring, and remove the large nut. I use channel locks to remove the star nut.

I hope you used XC90 spring seats, the 850/70 regular ones last 2 years.
