I think the relay is there to shut down the injectors if there's an accident.
When it fails the injectors wont open. The injectors have a constant +12 volts
on them all the time via those relay points. The injectors are opened by the ECU that switches the ground side (-).
Relays work so many cycles then reach their point of nirvana, busted.
You can jump the two wires at the relay to bypass it. In the 95 Volvo
2/32 You can jump pins 3 Green & 4 Red (marked on the relay 87 and 30)
Did your pal look at the plugs when it quit? They'd be dry if the injectors quit.
Someone made a "Noid light" to test the power to the injectors. I don't have the details, but it's just to see that you get 12VDC pulses at the injectors
